O Forte do Vigia, como era conhecido por cumprir a missão de vigiar e avisar a aproximação de navios, era apontado como uma barreira para os estrangeiros que tentassem invadir a cidade pelo Morro da Babilônia. Construído de 1776 a 1779, sua linha de defesa terminava com um imponente portão de pedra existente até hoje, em forma de arco, na ladeira do Leme. (Comando Militar do Leste)
