Summary[edit]

Description
English: Seen here in December 2021 is the arched wrought iron gate leading to the Anshe Ames and Workmens' Circle Cemeteries, located next door to each other on Pine Ridge Road in Cheektowaga, New York. Situated near the center of a massive cluster of cemeteries in the Pine Hill section of town, Anshe Ames was established about 1910 to serve the Russian Hasidic congregation of the same name (otherwise known as the Little Hickory Street Shul) that was located in the neighboring city of Buffalo, at first on the Near East Side and then, after its merger with Congregation B'rith Israel, on Hertel Avenue in the North Park section. The Workmens' Circle, for its part, was a Jewish relief, fraternal, and social organization that worked to support immigrants and refugees. The cemeteries continue to be maintained by the Jewish Federation Cemetery Corporation, but there haven't been any new burials since the early 1990s.
