| Description |
English: The monument of Saint Ansgar, on top of Björkö island in Lake Mälaren, Sweden. The island is famous for housing the excavation site Birka. The town of Birka was founded around AD 750 and flourished for more than 200 year, acting as a trading center which handled goods from Scandinavia and Finland as well as Central and Eastern Europe, and the Orient. Saint Ansgar's missionary work in Birka (circa AD 830) was the first attempt to convert the inhabitants from the Norse religion to Christianity, and it was unsuccessful.
