English: Lateral view showing an Anopheles and Culex larva in their charcteristic feeding positions. A: breathing tube; B: breathing opening; C: palmate hairs (float hairs), specialized, partly hydrophobic hairs that hold the larva of Anopheles parallel to the water's surface. They resemble small palm trees.
Deutsch: Seitenansicht einer Anopheles- und einer Culex-Larve in ihren charakteristischen Futterpositionen. A: Atemröhrchen oder -siphon; B: Atemöffnung; C: Palmhaare oder Schwimmhaare, das sind spezielle und teilweise wasserabweisende Haare, die die Anopheles-Larve parallel an der Wasseroberfäche verankern. Sie ähneln kleinen Palmen.
