Historical background: "Plusieurs portraits d'adolescents noirs passent, ou ont passé, pour des portraits de Zamor, le jeune page d'origine bengalaise, arrivé en France en 1769 et "adopté" par la comtesse du Barry. Dans les hautes sphères de la société française de l'époque, il n'était pas rare d'avoir un "négrillon" à son service. Nous savons que la comtesse du Barry commanda au moins deux portraits de Zamor, dont l'un au peintre Drouais. L'identification du portrait de Carnavalet comme Zamor, n'est pas absolument impossible, mais n'est pas non plus très vraisemblable si on le compare au portrait le plus probable, celui de Drouais, connu par une photographie (cf. Joseph Baillio, "un portrait de Zamor, page bengalais de Madame du Barry", GBA, octobre, p.233-242)." |
