pes is shown on pi. 1. FIRE PROTECTION. In order to fully protect the gun-factory buildings, a new 6-inch pipewas laid and a number of hydrants placed around the entire south endof the large gun shop (the north end being previously well protectedby outside hydrants). The location of these hydrants is shown in pi. 2.This new pipe is connected with the 8-inch distributing main. For the inside protection of the gun shop a complete circuit of 4-inchwater pipe has been laid; to this pipe is connected twenty-six 3 inchvalves, equally distributed around the shop; to each of these valvesthere is connected 50 feet of fire hose with nozzles attached, the hosebeing arranged on stationary hose racks, so that, in case of fire in anypart of the shop, a stream of water can be applied almost immediately.The arrangement of this inside system is shown in pis. 3 and 4. 176 APPENDIX 16. WATER POWER PLANT, ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER PLANT. The water power plant, as described in a previous report, has beenin successful operation during the past year. It has been necessary onseveral occasions to run the lower shops by means of electricity fromthe gun shop on account of freshets and the withdrawal of water fromthe Erie Canal by the State authorities. It has been found to be bothsafe and economical to run the lower shops by this means when thewater power plant is out of action. In order to increase the motor capacity, arrangements have been madewhereby both generators at the lower station can be operated as motorssimultaneously, giving a capacity sufficient to run the pumps and allthe machinery in the lower shops at the same time. The electric light and power plants have been operated this year withvery satisfactory results, very little repair having been necessary.
