<: Second Annual Report. 59 building and extends to a depth of about 10^ feet below thiswall. As the subway comes too close to the surface of thestreet to admit of-laying pipes and sewers in the roadway,these will be laid under the sidewalks ; and to provide roomfor these the upper corners of the cross-section of the subwayare rounded as shown on the drawing. The wall of the sub-way is of concrete, 32 inches thick, in which are imbedded,every 3 feet, curved steel posts. In the interior of the walls,about 8 inches from the back nearest the building, is a seriesof hollow spaces formed by ribbed tiles. The back of thewall is covered with asphalt. Any water which penetrates the asphalt and 8 inches ofconcrete will enter this hollow space formed by the ribbedtiling and be freely carried to the subway pumps. This isfor the purpose of causing the interior portion of the subwaywalls to be relatively dry. The roof of the subway and both the side-walls and roofof the station will be composed
