This tears apart the connection of the margin of the pileus with the base of the stem, as is plainly shown in figure 85. In breaking away, the con- necting portion or veil, is freed both from the stem and from the margin of the pileus, and is left as a free, o r loose ring, around the stem. In all of the plants of our for- mer study, the tommon mush- room {Agaricus caynpestris), the smooth lepiota {Lepiota riauci- nd), and the deadly amanita i^Avianita phallo- ides), the ring remained attached to the stem, i. e., it is not a free ring in those
