Champlain, the St. Law-rence, the Ohio Basin, the Susquehanna, the Delaware, the Hudsonwith adjacent small streams such as the Passaic, Hackensack,Wallkill and Bronx, and the large inland lakes, many of whichcommunicate with Lake Ontario. Long Island is richer in fish than the rest of the State, but itsspecies are chiefly marine. There are 217 marine forms of fishlife around Long Island and only 27 fresh water species in thestreams and lakes, of which 13 or more have been introducedwithin the last century or two. In the waters of the State thereare now catalogued between 375 and 400 species. In 1842, Dr. DeKay knew only the Yellow Perch, the Roach,Banded Pickerel and Brook Trout from Long Island. Dr.Mitchill transferred Yellow Perch from Lake Ronkonkoma toSuccess Pond, a distance of 40 miles, in 1790.
