BEETS The beet is cultivated in some of its varieties, universally, even in the smallest vegetable garden and is used in all stages of its growth. All the varieties succeed best on a deep, rich, sandy loam, and require to be thinned when small and kept free from weeds. For early beets sow as soon as the ground will admit, in drills fourteen inches apart, and thin to four inches distant. For Winter, sow bout the middle of Spring. If by mail, add at the rate of 8 cts. per lb. for \ lb. and upwards. Per pkt. per oz. per lb. Columbia. It closely resembles the Crosby's Egyptian and Excelsior, with smooth skin and deep blood red flesh, of rich tender quality . It is very early,'maturing quite as early as the Egyptian. In habit of growth it is remarkably thoroughbred, the foliage being small, neat and of a rich bronze color. Dark Red Egyptian. The earliest beet in cultivation; color a very deep red, small tops, and a good market variety ^Detroit Dark Red. (See Novelties page3) 4^clipse. Extremely popular among market gardeners. It is very early; dark red flesh and skin, small tops, almost spherical in form !>Edmand's Early Blood Turnip. A market gardener's strain of great regu- larity in shape; deep blood skin, and very dark flesh of best quality. ^Bastian's Early Blood Turnip. A dark red beet, early and good shape.... ♦^Early Bassano. One of the earliest sorts, flesh circled with bright red, grows to a large size on light soil ^Early Blood Turnip. A standard early variety, good for Summer or Winter «*T)ewing's Early Blood Turnip. Of fine form and flavor, deep blood red, free from fibrous roots Early Yellow Turnip. Similar to the blood Turnip in growth and shape, but different in color; flesh, yellow,ten- der and sweet ftbng Smooth Blood. An excellent late vari- ety, and good for Win- ter use; smooth skin, flesh dark red Swiss Chard or Silver This variety is cultiva- ted for its leaves. The mid rib is boiled and served like Asparagus, and the other portions of the leaves are used as Spinach. When wanted cut close down to the ground, and new tender leaves will be prodnced Swtss Chard. r
