thmetic. Numerous business forms are intro-duced. The aim is to make the class work touch life andbreathe the spirit of business. Most of the problems solvedare based upon facts which grow out of the school and com-munity life, or upon data concerning various industries asfound in Year Books, government bulletins, newspapers etc. During the second year of the professional course, specialemphasis is placed on how to teach Arithmetic in the grammargrades and how to make it more attractive and useful to theaverage student. The new practice school will offer oppor-tunity for supervised observation, and possibly some teach-ing in fourth and fifth grade Arithmetic. ENGLISH It is the purpose of the English Department to develop inthe students an understanding and appreciation of literature,a love of reading, and an intelligent use of the English lan-guage, both spoken and written. The aim of the professionalcourse in English is to make the students efficient teachers ofEnglish in the grades.

3H1 jo Aavaan East Carolina Teachers Training School. 25 In the first year emphasis is laid on the principles under-lying literature and composition and on the essentials of gram-mar. Classics representing each type of literature used inthe grades are studied analytically. In the composition workopportunity is given for writing all practical forms. In thesecond year the principles acquired in the first year are ap-plied to the actual work of the grades, therefore emphasis islaid on methods of teaching English. The purpose of the Academic course is to give that train-ing in English necessary for the work in the professionalyears. SPELLING All students are given a test in spelling on the first Sat-urday of the Fall term. Those who spell ninety out of a hun-dred familiar words in everyday use, are excused from furtherwork in spelling.
