Thepractical applications of percentage receive special emphasis.How to Teach Arithmetic by Projects is developed concretelyand not taught theoretically. ENGLISH It is the purpose of the English Department to develop in thestudents an understanding and appreciation of literature, a loveof reading, and an intelligent use of the English language, bothin writing and speaking. In the professional years the general aim of training the stu-dents so that they will be efficient teachers of English in thegrades is always kept in mind, as well as the idea that Englishis a subject that is the tool of all other subjects. In the first yearemphasis is laid on principles underlying literature and com-position, and in the second year these principles are appliedto the actual work in the grades. i 3£: -

East Carolina Teachers Training School 25 The Academic courses, from 1 through 6, are the equivalentof the last years of the high school course. Classics of the samegrade are used and a degree of proficiency in both technique andthought work in composition equal to that demanded by thehigh school is required. In the first professional year, courses 7 through 9, a carefulstudy is made of the common types of literature, paying especialattention to their organization, values, and the tangible thingsthat can be taught, as well as to develop in the students the powerto interpret the intangible, those things that cannot be taughtdirectly. These types are the short story, the novel, the simpleessay, biography, the play, the narrative poem, the nature poemand the poem of strong emotional appeal. The compositionwork includes the various forms in use in everyday life.
