lack of proper accommodation, 80,000volumes being crowded into a space but 50 feet square,which must also accommodate both readers and administra-tion. For the use of law students and the general public acollection of about 2,000 volumes—duplicates of the mostnecessary reports and text-books—has been placed at themain Library in alcoves adjoining the Reading Room. Besides the general collection in the room, however, thereare three special ones—(1) the Conference Room Library(about 11,000 volumes), located in the Conference Room ofthe Supreme Court and for the use of the Justices exclu-sively; (2) the collection—Judges sets—(about 4,300volumes) at the residences of the several Justices for theirindividual use; and the law section of the Toner collection(1,293 volumes), kept at the main library.history. Law Library. 277 main collection in the old library in the Capitol until 1832. 1832.On July 4 of that year Congress by an act directed thelibrarian to segregate the law books and to place them in aseparate and conveniently accessible room. The quartersselected were opposite the Supreme Court Chamber of thattime and on the ground floor of the Capitol, quarters thatare now used as a file room 03^ the Clerk of the Court. Bythe same act the Court was given a measure of control in themanagement of the law library. In 1859 the Senate vacated its old chamber and in i860 ^59-this chamber was occupied by the Supreme Court. Theroom vacated by the Court was assigned for use as a lawlibrary, and in 1861 the books were carried across the hall 1861.to the room where they now are. In this room Marshall satas Chief Justice during his entire judicial career, having asa colleague for years, Mr. Justice Story.
