Summary[edit]

Description
English: March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites.

Name:
Anne Hecht

Title:
Endangered Species Biologist

Duty station:
I’m on the Regional Office organization chart, but my duty station is at the
Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor:
Because I got started so many years ago, most of my mentors have been men – Bill Ashe (Region 5’s Deputy Regional Director in the 1980s) is one who springs to mind.

What did you study in school?
I have a B.A. in philosophy and a Master’s degree in forestry (M.F.). The analytic thinking and writing skills from my philosophy courses are extremely useful in my daily job.

How did you get interested in conservation?
When I was 12 years old, I went to a YWCA summer camp in Maine that specialized in canoeing and hiking. At the end of the summer, I told my parents, “when I grow up, I’m going to marry a forest ranger.” Yikes!

What’s your favorite thing about working for the Service?
I’ve had the amazing good fortune to make my avocation my vocation.

What’s your favorite species and why?

Sandhill cranes. Piping plovers are cute, but cranes are magnificent.
