Text Appearing After Image:
IOWA HISTORICAL BUILDING. 83 Historical Building corner a few minutes after 2 p. m. Uponleaving the carriages, the party, preceded by the governorsstaff in uniform, commanded by Gen. Byers, repaired at onceto the first story of the building where the Corner-stone wasto be laid. For some little time the air had been filled withmartial music by Maj. A. S. Carpers drum corps. A greatcrowd of people, estimated as high as 10,000, had assembledabout the grounds. A box made of rolled copper containedthe historical documents which it had been decided to placewithin the corner-stone. The stone bore the inscription,^lOWA, A. D. 1899. A cavity had been excavated in theunder side to fit down over the copper box. The box wasplaced in position upon a bed of cement, which was extendedand smoothed by Gov. Shaw and the assisting masons to forma proper resting-place for the stone. The silver trowel usedby Gov. Shaw was the same with which Gov. Samuel Merrilllaid the Corner-stone of the Capitol, Nov. 23
