Title
Anglo-Saxon button brooch
Description
English: Early medieval brooch: an early Anglo-Saxon copper alloy button brooch with traces of gilding. The brooch is incomplete; its central front panel is in poor condition, and the rim is missing, but some gilding remains. The poor preservation of the obverse face precludes close classification, and the chipcarved decoration is difficult to characterise in any detail, but in all likelihood incorporated stylised human-animal faces or zoomorphic motifs. The reverse of the brooch is flat, and the pin and catchplate are no longer extant. The find is nonetheless interesting and significant as a good example of the type.
