Title
Anglo-Saxon brooch: Small long brooch, square-headed style, copper alloy
Description
English: An Early Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small square-headed brooch brooch, dating to the 6th century. Although nicely cast, its incised line ornament is rather rudimentary, such that it might be classed as a small long brooch, copying the small square-headed form. The reverse retains a pair of lugs that would have made up the hinge mechanism, but the iron pin is now represented only by corrosion product. The brooch measures 64mm long, and has a maximum width of 28.8mm. The head is subrectangular (22mm wide, and 19mm deep). The brooch's maximum thickness is 3.1mm, though the attachment lug on the reverse is 9.0mm deep. The brooch weighs 26.0g.
