Title
Anglo-Saxon brooch: Foot of small long brooch, copper alloy
Description
English: An Early Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small long brooch, dating to around the 6th century. At this time, relatively crude imitations of larger brooches were produced, and these are termed 'small long brooches' (Hattatt 1985: 211). This is a good example of the type, measuring 51mm long, with a maximum head width of 24mm, and a bow thickness of 3.4mm. It weighs 11g. The head is roughly square and undecorated, measuring 24mm by 22m, while the bow is short (truncated at 29mm) and gently curved at the top, with a straighter, thin section close to the (now lost) foot. There is a small raised, rectangular area just above the foot. There is a single lug on the reverse (5.9mm deep) ,and iron corrosion representing the original pin.
