In the towns, the houses of themerchants and nobles were fairly comfortable; but the homesof the workmen were miserable, dirty, one-story huts. In the market place, in the center of the town or on the banksof the river, cattle from the country were herded and killed bythe butchers and offered for sale. Food of all kinds — vege-tables, grain, fruit, and fish — was piled in great baskets, andmen and women handled it and shouted and quarreled with theowners trying to get the best bargains they could. Clothing ofwool and linen and cotton was displayed against the walls ofbuildings or hung on racks in front of the shops.
