126 Bible and. Commentatoe. into the midst of Egypt: and all the first-born in the land of Egypt shalldie, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even untothe first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of beasts. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land ofEgypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more. This plague was the most alarming of all. And Pharaoh rose up inthe night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there wasa great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not onedead. In Egypt, when any died, the people ran into the streets, and howled,and showed their grief in the strongest manner. What a scene of distressmust there have been in the streets, when some from every house ran outand cried! Pharaoh was now convinced that it was in vain to fight against God, andwas, probably, afraid for his own life, and for the lives of all his people.

So the children of Israel went away in so much haste, that they evencarried their dough with them that was mixed for their bread, withouthaving time to bake it. And having been cheated out of their wages fortheir hard labor, they borrowed, or rather ashed, for some silver and goldfrom the Egyptians,—for they would not at Gods command have borrowedwithout intending to pay; and the people, glad to get rid of them, in theirfright gave them jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment.
