Description
English: This uncoloured aquatint is taken from plate 4 of Captain Alexander Allan's 'Views in the Mysore Country'. Allan's sketches are a record of the third Anglo-Mysore war, one of the most crucial battles fought by the British in their campaign to become the chief power in India. Led by the determined Lord Cornwallis, the Governor General in India, the British faced perhaps their most indomitable Indian foe, Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, and pushed for control over his prosperous dominions..

In the first and second Anglo-Mysore wars Tipu and his father Haider Ali had fended off the British, but neither side could claim absolute success. Haider died in the second Anglo-Mysore war. In the third war (1790-92), helped by strategic alliances with other Indian rulers, the British defeated Tipu who had to sue for peace in the Treaty of Srirangapatna. This hill fort at Anchetti in Tamil Nadu was taken by Lord Cornwallis in July 1791..
