The Air-Vesic I e s.—The smallest branch of a bronchus (Fig.70, a) swells so as to end in a littlebag containing air, called an air-space (Fig. 70, b). The walls ofthese air-spaces are again subdividedso as to form a large number of smallsacs called air-vesicles. The wallsof these air-vesicles are very thin andcontain many blood-vessels. Fromthis description it will be seen thatthe lungs really consist of a greatcollection of small sacs or spaces filledwith air.
