two ves-sels are persistent in birdsand some mammalia. Thesubsequent changes whichtake place in these vessels arethe following. The communi-cating branch between thetwo trunks enlarges and formsthe future left innominatevein; the remaining part ofthe left trunk is obliterated asfar as the heart, where it re-mains pervious, and forms thecoronary sinus ; a remnant ofthe obliterated vessel is seenin adult life as a fibrous bandpassing along the back of theleft auricle and in front ofthe root of the left lung, calledby Mr. Marshall, the vestigialfold of the pericardium. The internal mammaryveins, two in number toeach artery, follow thecourse of that vessel, andreceive branches corres-ponding with those derivedfrom it. The two veinsunite into a single trunk, which terminates in theinnominate vein. The inferior thyroidveins, two, frequently threeor four in number, arisein the venous plexus, onthe thyroid body, commu-nicating with the middleand superior thyroid veins. The left one, descends in

Theright one, which is placed a little to the right of the median line, opens into theright vena innominata, just at its junction with the superior cava. These veinsreceive tracheal and inferior laryngeal branches, and are provided with valves attheir termination in the innominate veins. The Superior Intercostal Veins return the blood from the upper intercostalspaces. The right superior intercostal, much smaller than the left, closely correspondswith the superior intercostal artery, receiving the blood from the first, or first andsecond intercostal spaces, and terminates in the right vena innominata. Some-times it passes down, and opens into the vena azygos major. The left superior intercostal is always larger than the right, but varies in sizein different subjects, being small when the left upper azygos vein is large, and
