The epithelial lining is much thicker, continuous with the epidermis, and aloneforms the spiral portion of the tube. When the cuticle is carefully removed fromthe surface of the cutis, these convoluted tubes of epidermis may be drawn out, 576 ORGANS OF SENSE. and form nipple-shaped projections on its under surface. According to Kolliker,a layer of non-striated muscular fibres, arranged longitudinally, is found betweenthe areolar and epithelial coats of the ducts of the larger sweat-glands, as in theaxilla, root of the penis, on the labia majora, and around the anus. The contents of the smaller sweat-glands are quite fluid; but in the largerglands, the contents are semi-fluid and opaque, and contain a number of colouredgranules, and cells which appear analogous to epithelial cells. The Tongue. The tongue is the organ of the special sense of taste. It is situated in thefloor of the mouth, in the interval between the two lateral portions of the body of 298.—Upper Surface of the Tongue.

Its apex THE TONGUE. 577 or tip, thin and narrow, is directed forwards against tlie inner surface of thelower incisor teeth. The under surface of the tongue is connected with thelower jaw bj the Genio-liyo-glossi muscles; from its sides, the mucous mem-brane is reflected to the inner surface of the gums; and, in front, a distinct foldof that membrane, the fr^enum linguae, is formed beneath its under surflice. The tip of the tongue, part of its under surface, its sides, and dorsum, arefree. The dorsum of the tongue is convex, marked along the middle line by a raphe, which divides it into two symmetrical halves; and this raphe terminates behind, about half an inch from the base of the orga
