Summary[edit]

Description

AV receiver Denon AVR 3808 from 2007/2008, sectional rear view. The part of the rear panel shown in the image concerns the input (left part of image) and the pre-output (right part of image, divided by vertical line) of an analog surround sound signal. This may, e.g., stem from a DVD-player which has an output of the surround sound signal stored on a DVD in the form of components.

The components of the surround sound signal are, in a 7.1 signal such as is, e.g., possible in Dolby Pro Logic IIx (or IIz):
FL = Front speaker left
FR = Front speaker right
C = Center speaker
SW = Subwoofer, naturally mono such as the center speaker signal
SL = Surround speaker left
SR = Surround speaker right
SBL = Surround back speaker left
SBR = Surround back speaker right

The left EXT.IN field has eight cinch plugs for each of the above channel signals. The right PRE OUT field has the same channels, but for outputting a signal which was processed in the AV Receiver itself. One use case for the "PRE OUT" function would be to use the AV receiver only for processing and controlling the surround sound signal, while the power amplification is carried out in one or (typically) more power amplifiers additional to the AV receiver. Some early DVD players also had the ability to decode the surround signal present on a DVD, which could then be forwarded to this AV receiver via the "EXT.IN" section, thereby requiring eight single cinch cables and thus producing a huge 'cable chaos' behind and between devices.
