Title
An incomplete medieval copper alloy casket key dating to the late 12th century.
Description
English: An incomplete medieval copper alloy casket key dating to the late 12th century. The key has a circular bow which is heavily worn on the outer edge. The shank has been bent so that the bow is almost 45 degrees. The bit connects to the shank by a rectangular moulded section beneath the terminus end of the shank. The bit appears to have had rounded clefts but it has been heavily worn and is almost triangular in shape. There is a circular depression at the terminus of the shank which is where the pin in the lock would have been fitted (Egan, 1998, 111).

It has been suggested that copper alloy keys, such as this, were replicas of iron originals due to the lack of copper alloy lock mechanisms (Egan, 1998, 111). However several medieval copper alloy locking mechanism have since been found and are recorded on the PAS database e.g. CORN-2DAA35 and SOM-8F0F55. It is also suggested that these smaller, rudimentary keys were perhaps used with casket locks (Ibid. 111).

Dimensions: length: 28.17 mm; width (of bit and shank): 12.19 mm; thickness of stem: 4.42 mm; diameter of bow: 9.52 mm; weight: 3.18g.
