An evening in Hampi, at the Vijaya Vitthala Temple

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a picture of the Vijaya Vitthala Temple at Hampi, in Karnataka State of India. These ruins are what remains of the fabled Vijayanagara Empire which flourished on the banks of the Tungabhadra River during 1336 - 1565 CE. This particular temple, dedicated to Vishnu in the form of Vitthala, had its beginnings as a small shrine in the early days of the Empire, and was expanded and embellished in the 1500's.

Hampi, though famous as the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire, was a center of human habitation from prehistoric times. Discerning travelers can spot prehistoric rock art even within the extent of this medieval city. I was exploring the Mosalaiahana Hill to the east of the temple in December 2013, to spot a rock art panel on a large boulder there. As I returned, the sun was setting, and I beheld the ruins of this magnificent temple complex, with its spires and colonnaded bazars, in the mellow evening light, against the backdrop of tumbled boulders of granite inselbergs which form the dramatic landscape of Hampi.

In that moment, I felt that this snapshot summed up the layers of history at Hampi.
