Tavern Signs — and IVonders *^ By industry we thrive and another thisrhyme: Here in this hive we are all alive,Good liquor makes us funny. If you are dry step in and tryThe flavor of our honey.* The Worcester Society of Antiquity ownsthe sign of Walkers Tavern, a famous housein Charlestown, New Hampshire, which dis-played dozens of realistic bees hoveringaround a properly symmetrical hive! The old sign of the inn at Paxton, Massa-chusetts shows upon one side Lord Corn-wallis and Charles Paxton shaking handsacross a well-loaded table at which theyappear to be dining. Over the picture arethe words: ^ Our good cheer tends to makeenemies friends. But one must not con-clude from this that the poltroon marshalof the Admiralty Court of Boston was afavourite among the good citizens of thistown. Such, indeed, was far from beingthe case; they could not forget that Paxtonhad never fulfilled his promise to give thema bell for the meeting-house if only theywould call their settlement after him!
