Anne Hutchinson and some of her followers, who fled from persecution iu Massachusetts and settled near the Dutch atManhatten, are attacked by a party of Indians, who murdersixteen whites, among whom is Mrs. Hutchinson herself. 1644. April 18—Second Indian massacre in Virginia, in which about three hundred whites are killed.The legislature of Massachusetts divided into two houses, after numerous broils and discontents between the representatives and council for supremacy, while together.War against the Indians in Virginia breaks out in consequence of the massacre, and Opechancanough taken prisoner, and shot without orders. 1645. Roger Williams obtains a charter for Rhode Island. He is employed by the Narragansetts to aid them in making peacewith the English at Boston, which is effected.

William Pynchon, the political father of Springfield on the eastside of the Connecticut river, came from England with governorWinthrop, and commenced a settlement at Roxburj, near Boston,1630. Having explored the Connecticut valley, and obtained leaveof court, he, with several others, among whom was Rowland Steb-bins, ancestor of all of the name, came to Springfield, 1636; and intrue spirit of pilgrims, entered into a solemn compact for the govern-ment of the settlement, especially to settle a minister 5 the soil hav-ing been purchased of the Indians, by leave of court, without whichthe land could not be received on lease, gift, or purchase. Each set-tler had a house-lot on the west side of the street eight rods wide,which extended from the river east and west, to contain about twen-ty-five acres more or less.
