ary in order to do the registering accurately. The ten-secondconstant is freer from this error, and, in most cases, is nearer themean constant. It should be remarked that where there is inaccuracy in the regis-tration of the vibrations of the pendulum, there is a correspondingincrease in the muscular effect. Sometimes, when the subject beginsthe muscular work after beginning the registration, the lever of thedynamometer will reach nearly its maximum for a second or two,then drop suddenly as the mental work is begun accurately. Inbeginners in these experiments, there is either a rapid oscillationfrom one kind of work to another or the innervations given to theregistering hand are transmitted to the pulling hand, as the impulsesare periodically summed. Probably both these influences are felt. In Table III («) I have given the result of ten experiments per-formed upon myself after I had had some practice in experimenting.Table III (/;) gives the results obtained from different subjects.
