fficult.Large breeders are many times at a loss to know what to calltheir foals. I prefer giving each animal at the start a good 176 MANAGEMENT OP THE FOAL. and appropriate name. For this purpose I have for many yearskept a book of well-selected names, both male and female, alphabetically arranged and applicable to any animal, and as Iuse a name I so designate it on the book that I may not use thesame name a second time ; thus I am better able to keep a runof my animals than I would otherwise be. When I can do sowithout repetition I prefer to give a foal a name that will identifythe family to which he belongs. For instance, a filly desirable for a brood mare may havethe name of some flower, and to all of her descendants may begiven the names of flowers. Or, the family lines may be sufficiently marked by givingone mare and her descendants the names of cities, villages, ortowns; to others, the names of poets, novelists, or otherwriters, and such names as they have chosen for their works.

CHAPTEK XXI. BREEDING THE AMERICAN TROTTER. Speed attractive feature— Only few trot fast — Breed for beauty, size, style, and action — Demand for first-class roadsters in advance of supply —Easier to breed beauty than speed — The standard craze — Frenchahead of Americans in systematic breeding — Selecting breeding stock— The most modern breed — Color — Hambletonians — MambrinoChief — Blue Bull — Early foals — Good care important — High pricesfor. THE general principles of horse-breeding as laid down inanother chapter are, of course, as applicable to breedingthe American trotter as to that of other breeds; nevertheless,I feel that the importance of this breed in America requires amore special notice than I have given in my general principlesof horse-breeding. In breeding the American trotter, speed is one of the mostattractive features of the whole business, but it should ever beborne in mind that to breed for speed alone would be theheight of folly.
