June, 1911 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS Vll FRUIT DISEASE INVESTIGATION THE investigation and study of fruit diseases have been vigorously pushed and have shown a healthy progress. The destructive tumor disease of limes and other citrus fruits has been shown to be of fungous origin and attacks oranges as well as limes. The new meth- ods of spraying with sulphur compound by pathologists of the Department of Agriculture has been widely adopted by apple growers. The investigation shows that fine fruit can be produced and pro- tection secured against fungous disease without the injurious effect resulting from copper compound. Bordeaux mixture is still being used, but in the spraying of apples it has taken second place. Special attention has been given to the experi- mental work in perfecting the method of using the new sulphur sprays for the fruit spot and leaf disease. As a result, fruit growers who have used the new sprays have secured fine crops of the best apples they have ever grown. Spraying has very largely prevented the fruit spot and leaf disease known as cedar rust, or orange rust, prevalent in the Blue Ridge and Al- leghany mountain district from Pennsyl- vania to Tennessee. The peach growers of Virginia, West Virginia and Georgia have been prompt to adopt the discovery of spraying with self-boiled lime-sulphur for brown rot and scab, which has re- sulted in the removal of some of the fac- tors which rendered the growing of this fruit uncertain. The pear blight eradica- tion methods have been in extensive use on the Pacific coast. THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICUL- TURE AND NEW FRUITS THE attention of the Department of Agriculture has been called to a dispatch published in various Cali- fornia papers stating that the department had originated a new type of navel orange and that several thousand young trees were ready for distribution this month throughout California. These state- ments as published are misleading and are apparently based on a misapprehen- sion of the facts. The department has no new navel oranges nor new citrus fruits of any kind for distribution in California at present. Experiments in the breeding of new navel oranges and other citrus fruits have been under way for several years, but these experiments are still in the preliminary stage. None of the new sorts will be distributed until thoroughly tested under the auspices of the depart- ment and found to be of promise. None of them has as yet fruited, therefore it is not known whether any will be of com- mercial value. DEW WATER THE ancient "dew drops" of England have their modern counterparts on the Rock of Gibraltar, where drink- ing water is obtained by the condensa- tion of the abundant dew in especially prepared basins. The primitive process consists in making a hollow in the ground and filling the bottom with dry straw, over which is placed a layer of clay. On a clear night the clay cools very rapidly, and the dew is condensed into water in the basin. The pond is improved by put- ting a layer of asphalt or Portland cement under the straw. At Gibraltar the pres- ent practice is to use wood instead of straw and sheet iron instead of clay.
