Persian rug, upon which ados-a-dos arrangement ofseats encompasses a groupof palms and azaleas, and, like the other seats andsofas, are of the Louis XVperiod, of exquisite silkencoverings, set in gold. Beau-t i f u 1 tables, ornamentedwith the choicest chinavases, lend richness to all. Its chief distinction, how-ever, lies in its three antiquesilken tapestries of the finestpoint. They are fromthe famous Gobelin manu-factory, and were madefrom cartoons by Wouver-mans. The largest, at thewest end of the room, is averitable work of art. Withits wide, rich border, it arrests the eye with compellingpower and holds it until its beauties are compre-hended, even by those who are not connoisseurs. The twoother tapestries on the side of the long wall are of the sameexquisite beauty, but a little smaller. The three furnish thecontrolling notes of color in this spacious salon. A sedan chair, once owned by a princess, occupies a posi-tion near the fireplace, and is used as a cabinet for rare china.

A Pipe Organ Crowns the Hall, Giving a Fine Setting Which Is Greatly Heightened by the Presence ofthe Flight^of Night, Painted by the Late Holman Hunt February, 1907 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS 59 The only modern piece hereseen is a grand piano. Ofthe long French windows, draped with rare lace, oneleads out upon a terrace, where we look to find a for-eign scene, in keeping withthis luxurious salon. It is,however, no disappointmentto find the Neponset Riverwinding gently along be-hind the tall pines, the bluehaze of the western hillscompleting this choice viewof beautiful American land-scape. Crossing the main hall, the visitor comes to thelarge and elegant dining-room, deeply wainscoted inSan Domingo mahogany. Here the walls are coveredwith dark-red linen, dull infinish, making an admirablebackground for the oldSpanish sideboards andchairs, also of mahogany. On the walls are familyportraits, and a few Frenchlandscapes. Over the man-tel hangs Mr. Tarbells portrait of Mrs. Slater and herfour
