The estate consists of nearly one hundred acres, and theutmost care is taken that its natural advantages shall not belessened by undue artificial treatment. A musical brook runsthrough the grounds, adding the welcome element of water;this stream may eventually be converted into a miniatureDutch canal, affording the children of the neighborhood op-portunities for boating and skating. The front of the house stands upon a terrace, and is chieflyof cypress timbers and stucco; its color is agreeably height-ened by a red-tiled roof, on which the sun gleams in themidst of the shadows of the pine trees. Over the fireplace is a mantel of gray stone, on which are placed fitting ornaments.The walls are hung withheavy Flemish tapestry, andwith articles of old-time war-fare. The dark and rich effect ofthe hall is deepened by theuse of bog-oak for its fur-nishings, and for the spaciousand handsome staircase,which is an ornamental fea-ture of the great room. Asone enters the hall, the eye isdelighted with the bright andgorgeous hues of the largecircular conservatory in therear. Here are a generousnumber of bay trees, palms,azaleas, and other plants inbloom. Nothing would be morestriking in contrast than thisglory of color as a back-ground for the somber effect
