d beyond the wings. In the center is a triumphal arch,rising high to the crowning cornice which its keystone justtouches. Roman Ionic columns, with an accompanying pair center of the house are loggias which connect with the wings,each with its own steps, descending at right angles to thecentral flight to the great lower terrace. The loggias arebuilt of terra cotta, with piers and columns, and, furnishedwith rugs, tables, and chairs, are most delightful lounging-places. The outlooks over the countryside from any of theseparts are of rare beauty; immediately below is the deep valleyand the road, which the house seems almost to overhang; be-yond are fields of rich grass, trees and woods, hills and val-leys, a lovely country outlook, perhaps nowhere so enjoyable,or so beautiful, as from the doorway beneath Mr. Biddlesarch of triumph. The Main Hall Looking Toward the Vestibule. It Is a Splendid White Apartment, Two Stories High 5° AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS February, 1907 space of similar dimensions and treated in an identical man-ner. This is without inner doors, but open on to the broadcorridor that runs across the house from right and left. Cur-tains of red damask on three sides convert the center of thecorridor into a sort of antechamber beyond which is thegreat central hall. Quite from the outer door the spacioussplendor of this apartment has been visible, for the whole ofthe center of the house is brilliantly illuminated by the floodof light admitted by the vast window under the arch of theterrace front. The hall is of regal proportions, rising to the full height ofthe second story. Ionic columns, on either side, divide it intothree bays. It is thus basilical in plan, with aisles on eachouter edge, while the central space is supported by the col-umns and pilastered piers in the corners. Above the entabla-tur
