nded to the first families of Vir-ginia during his mastership of Shirley were distinctive intheir elegance and magnificence. He died in 1806, and theestate passed into the hands of Dr. Robert Carter, who wasborn in 1774, and married Mary, daughter of Gen. ThomasNelson, of Yorktown. From him it descended to his eldestson, Hill Carter, who was born in 1796, was an officer ofthe United States Navy in 1812, and married Mary Braxton,daughter of Col. Robert Randolph. Upon the decease ofHill Carter the estate became the property of his son, RobertRandolph Carter, a lieutenant in the United States Army,who was the fifth Carter owner of Shirley. He marriedLouise Humphreys. The present owner, Mrs. Alice CarterBransford, is a daughter of Robert and Louise Carter, beingthe sixth owner in a direct line from the first Carter ofShirley. When Charles Carter, grandson of Robert Carter, knownas King Carter, married, in 1770, Ann Butler Moore, andtook his bride to Shirley, he made extensive alterations,

The Side Porch A Garden Walk 376 AMERICAN HOMES AND GARDENS October, 1907 including the raising of theroof, which was one ofthe familiar hipped style,to the mansard roof, piercedby rows of dormer windows,which it now has; the addi-tion of the two-s t o r yporches at the two fronts ofthe mansion, and the re-moval of the partition whichoriginally formed a narrowhall extending through thedepth of the house; the lat-ter alteration permitting ofthe extra space being throwninto the dining-room on theriver side. It is supposedthat he also added the hand-s o m e paneled walls andcornices throughout theinterior, for strangely enough when the present owner re-moved some of the paneled wainscoting for the purpose ofinstalling a water supply she found very fine hand-finishedwalls, which would indicate that the paneled walls were alater feature added to ornament the interior when CharlesCarter took possession of Shirley.
