ns forthe planting of Tunxis. In 1645 tne village of Tunxis Sepusbecame, by legislative enactment, the town of Farmington.The settlers found the natural features of the place muchthe same as we see them to-day. The main street, extending from one end of thetown to the other,with its houses builtby the settlers onwhat was termed, inthe time of the colo-nists, town lots, istypical of all theNew England vil-lages. The farmand pasture landswere separate allot-ments to the settlers,and they extendedup the mountainside toward the eastand to the river onthe west. Along the mainstreet houses beganto rise, log huts atfirst, each provided,as required by law,with a ladder reach-ing to the ridge forthe purpose of per-mitting the chimnevviewers to examinethe chimneys ofeach house every sixmonths. These loghuts, however, sub-sequently gave wayto more substantialand pretentioushouses.
