Reclining upon a crimson sofa, with head resting upon her hand, she looks dreamilythrough and beyond you.1 A bitter, freezing blast sweeps the highlands. A poor, benumbed shepherd, with his smallflock, has paused to rest in his toilsome journey up themountain side. The sheep are huddled about hithough beseeching shelter from the pitiless coleFrom the upturned cape of the mans coat afilm of snow is blown, which cuts the fleshand blinds the sight. Let us rthat a haven is not far away.In the delineation of suchsubjects Schenck is un-equalled. A diamond pool,embowered with trail-ing branches bent lowwith weight of foli-age and sweet-odoredflowers, is the retreatof a golden-hairednymph. Lying uponits margin in the joy-ous abandon of com-plete seclusion, sheplucks the dew-ladenopening buds, lookingupward at the flecksof sky through thedelicate tracery ofleaves. Her form, aharmony of roundedlines and gracefulcurves, is softly re-flected in the mirror-like depthspeopled with fauns and dryads.
