A beautiful Saturday sunset from the @AmericanHiking Takeover of My Public Lands Instagram. “America’s great trails do not build nor sustain themselves. A large percentage of our trails are maintained by volunteers every year. This stewardship is harnessed and passionately displayed on one day in particular, @AmericanHiking #NationalTrailsDay on the first Saturday of June each year. National Trails Day brings out over 20k volunteers a year to give trails across the country the tender loving care they require and deserve. And none is more deserving than the BLM’s King Range National Conservation Area in California. The remote 68,000 acres of coastline is known as California’s Lost Coast, and is only accessed by a few back roads. The trails here are as diverse and rugged as the landscape - from mountains meadows to old-growth forests and ridgetop vistas. King Range hike offers one of the few coastal wilderness hiking experiences in the US, where hikers can view sea lions and tidepools.” Photo by Mike Pittsley |
