DescriptionAmerica Fostering the Arts and Industries and Atlantes by William Boyd - Thomas Jefferson Building - Washington, D.C. - Sarah Stierch.jpg |
Two rounded pediments supported by columns of half-figure males (Atlantes). "The left pediment contains an American eagle with wings outstretched behind two putti.... The left child sits with a globe at his feet and holds an open book atop two other volumes. He is symbolic of Industries. The putto on the right side, Arts, sits adjacent to a painter's palette and brushes and an Ionic capital, which are representative, respectively, of Painting and Architecture. The right pediment, ...also has the American eagle with a putto on each side. The left figure, Industries, sits beside a cogwheel and anvil, symbolic of Commerce. The right figure, Arts, sits beside a harp with an open book...to symbolize Music and Literature."
