They presented an extraordinary contrast to the big, well-fed,well-clothed Anglo-Saxons, who came pouring up in a never-ceasing streamfrom the seashore. Everywhere one turned there were cheerful groups of soldiers. Somehad climbed cocoanut trees, which grew in hundreds on the flat sand swamps,and were feasting on the ripe fruit or drinking the agreeable cooling liquid
