English: On September 27, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a nearly cloud-free day over the Amazon Basin.

Centered on the state of Amazonas, Brazil, the image captures the Amazon River and its many tributaries winding through luxuriant growth of rainforest. The Amazon River appears muddy in many areas, where it carries sediment from the surrounding lands, including as far as the mountains of Peru, where the earliest tributaries rise.

The clear skies and relatively narrow width of the rivers are clues that show that this image was acquired well into the dry season, which runs from June to November. The driest month in the Amazon Basin is August, with an average rainfall is about 2 inches (5 cm). In contrast, rainfall from May – December is often more than 8 inches (20 cm) per month, with a total annual rainfall averaging between 6 – 10 feet (1.3 to 3 meters).
