English: Three portraits of men by J. Alphonse Pellion, the artist who accompanied French explorer Louis de Freycinet to the Sandwich Islands (now the Hawaiian Islands) on board the Uranie. The portraits are, from left to right, of William Pitt Kalanimoku (c. 1768–1827), a High Chief who served in a role similar to that of a prime minister in the Kingdom of Hawaii; John Young (c. 1742–1835), a British subject who became an important military advisor to Kamehameha I; and Naihe-Kukui Kapihe (died 1825), known as "Captain Jack" or "Jack the Pilot" to visitors, who served as Honolulu harbor master and admiral of the royal fleet in the early Hawaiian Kingdom. |
