The picture is from the roof in the long-house, old Alnö Church, it contains paintings probably made by one of Albertus Pictors students. The paintings in the roof have never been touched or restored, the only thing that´s been doone is some cleaning. The roof and walls inside the church were painted in the late 15th century. In this picture you can see (upside down): St. Clemens (to the .left) and St. Antonius to the right. St. Clemens lived during the first century after Christ and is said to be one of the first apostologic fathers. Because of his Christian fate St Clemens was banished from Rome. St. Antonius lived approximately during 251-356 a.c. and was borne in Egypt. When his parents died, he gave away his inheritance to the poor and went out to the desert to live like an hermit. He also is said to have laid the ground for the monasteries. To the left in the picture there is a painting of St. Antonius between two monks. In this painting he is carrying a "tau-cross", it looks like a "T". This was originally from the old Egypt and a symbol of immortality. He also has a bell in his hand and it should have been used when he was alone in the desert and affected by demons and spirits. With the bell he could scare them away. To the right in the picture you can also see the mockery of Job. According to the old testament Job was an honest man, but he had seven sons that were somewhat different. Because of the sons wrongdoing God decided to punish the sons and also Job. Neighbours attacked him and steeled his cattle and his land. Job got severe ulcerations with lots of pain and he banished the day he was born. He thought that God was unfair to punish him for his sons sins. Job asserted that he was innocent and thereby he also accused God. For more information about Job - The book of Job in the Bible.
