| Description |
English: George Lambert, the maker of this alms dish, was also director of the French Hospital. The engraving on the dish shows the hospital seal provided by Pierre Marchant, one of the original directors in 1718. It illustrates the Old Testament account of God providing food and drink for the prophet Elijah during a time of drought. The charity became known as "La Providence".
London, England, 1897-8: marked by George Lambert. Gilded Silver. Inscribed on the front, "DOMINUS PROVIDBIT" (God will provide): on the back, "This Dish designed and manufactured by Col. George Lambert F.S.A. was presented by the Deputy Governor to the French Hospital on the occasion of the 180th Anniversary" (of the Royal Charter of Incorporation). |
