Pedlars Pike was thefixture, as it had been from time immemorial with Meadowvaleopening days, but the pike-keeper was sore dismayed on findingthat instead of a long string of carriages as on former occasionsonly a few vehicles, mostly hired at Mead, rumbled into view.Not one drag, not one tandem cart was there, and as the hour,eleven, drew near it really looked as if there had been somedoubt as to the appointed place of rendezvous.
