Summary[edit]
DescriptionAll Saints Church, Skipsea - geograph.org.uk - 810136.jpg |
English: All Saints Church, Skipsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Skipsea Castle was recorded as having a church in around 1100 and the dedication to All Saints or All Hallows was recorded from about 1500. In 1311 the vicar in this seemingly quiet East Yorkshire village was censured for an unspecified offence with a woman, and in 1578 and 1650 women from Skipsea and neighbouring Ulrome were accused of witchcraft. In 1665 it appears that minister Ralph Cornwall was replaced at All Saints because of drunkenness, brawling and other offences. The church has been much altered having fallen into disrepair on many occasions. It was probably rebuilt in the 14th century and was rebuilt from an almost ruinous state in 1866 to designs by James Fowler of Louth. |
