LTHOUGH epilepsy is defined on the basis of an entity as achronic disease characterized by recurring attacks of loss ofconsciousness, with or without tonic or clonic spasms, or both,it is in reality but a syndrome resulting from various condi-tions which through their action on the brain produce a suddeninvoluntary discharge of nervous energy. In other words, itis the manifestation of the involuntary conversion of potentialinto actual energy through instability of the cerebral neuronichierarchy—either an excessive irritability of the sensoro-motorcenters or diminished control (inhibition ) through debility ofthe psycho-motor area.
