The photograph depicts Alexander Winton seated at the steering wheel, in what is described as "the first demonstration of an automobile in Cleveland." Future Cleveland mayor Tom L. Johnson sits in the rear, closest to the camera. The image was taken in front of Winton Motor-Carriage Company on Berea Road. Although multiple sources indicate the year of the photograph as 1896, the Winton Motor-Carriage Company was not incorporated until 1897. |
