“ Начало работы над серией московских видов относится к 1800 г., когда Ф. Я. Алексеев на средства Кабинета Е. И. В. во второй половине сентября был командирован в Москву. Эта и две другие картины («Площадь в Московском Кремле» и «Вид Московского Кремля со стороны Каменного моста»), очевидно, были написаны художником в Петербурге на основании эскизов, сделанных в Москве.

В ГИМ находится подобная работа большего размера с несколько измененной композицией переднего плана («Соборная площадь в Москве с Грановитой палатой». 80 × 106).
